MAN IN AN “IRON LUNG” MILLIONAIRE’S SON PEKIN, June 2. Enclosed in an “iron lung” Mr Frederick Smite, son of a Chicago 'millionaire, suffering from infantile paralysis and who must live in an iron respirator, has begun a life or death journey to Chicago, which will cost £120,000. During the journey Mr Smite’s life depends on the efficiency of a portable petrol engine now operating the giant respirator. The Chinese Government is co-oper-ating by clearing the lines for a special train in which he will travel to Shanghai and then across to San Francisco in a specially equipped room in the liner President Roosevelt. At San Francisco, a special train will carry him to Chicago. Mr Smite will be accompanied by his father, doctors, and engineers to operate the respirator, nurses, and diet experts.
