BOUT OVER BIG COUNTRY

CLARION CALL PLEASES ON WANGANUI TRACKS A pleasing display over the big fences was provided by Clarion Call on Saturday morning, the Hunting Song gelding being sent over ten fences on the course proper. The obstacles consisted of the Wanganui Steeplechase brush fences and the hencoop just past the six furlong peg. Ridden by Jenkins, Clarion Call jumped every obstacle in irreproachable style, being quick to size up the situation each time and sdapt his pace to the requirements, as for instance when he got a little too close to his fences. At the finish of what was the equivalent of just over a mile and aquarter he still bowling along without undue effort, in spite of the fact that it will be two years next October since he last jumped a brush fence. Clarion Call claims the double engagement at Wanganui of the Century Hurdles on the first day and the Wanganui Steeplechase on the second day. His stable companion, Hunting Queen, was sent over four flights of schooling hurdles and did her task well. The only other work of main interest on Saturday morning was Brazen King’s five furlongs in Imin. 6 2-ssec. Sam’s Choice and Koura Rua slipped over four furlongs and finished together to register 54sec., which was note quite as good as Sam’s Choice did the previous Saturday. Captain Treville, ridden by A. W. Sinton, lightweight in L. G. Butler’s stable, recorded 51sec. for four furlongs. His rider has applied for a licence, and as he can go to scale in the vicinity of 7.7 he should secure plenty of opportunities. Acceptances Due To-morrow. Acceptances for all first-day events at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting are due to close at 9 o’clock tomorrow nighU
