“HAT TRICK”
HAWERA TRAINER AT FOXTON CUP WON BY ONE WHETU GREAT HOLIDAY CROWD A feature of the Foxton Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, when a great holiday crowd attended, was the “hat trick” registered by J. Fryer, the Hawera trainer, with Vadanoe, Red Manfred and One Whetu, respective winners of the first three races. These events comprised the maiden race, the hurdle race and the Foxton Cup, and later in the day Red Manfred was saddled up again to run second in the Kebbell Memorial, the open sprint. That the attendance was larger than last year’s corresponding fixture was evident from the crowded carpark, the double "gate” returns, and the totalisator increase irom £7147 to £11,770 10s, the total being £4622 10s. The supply of race books was exhausted early in the day. One Whetu won the r oxton Cup like the good horse he is, and after the successes of his two stablemates he was the elect of backers, though he had not previously scored this season. Royal Banquet, who was not sent out in the list of acceptors, returned a great price for seconu, and he was the only one to threaten tne favourite. Keipar made his record lour wins on enu when tne Greyspear gelding led all the way in the xkebbell Memorial, for which be was almost equal favourite w’ith the disappointing Sir Nigel. Two 'laranaid norses in Red Manfred and Gold Mission nlled the minor places. The steeplechase event was won by Petrarcn, who was not troubled after he had assumed tne lead eany a mile from heme, though he cnanced the last couple oi fences, winning nicety from the extreme outsider, Blatter, irom F. W. Davis’ Woodville stable. Red Manfred, making his deout in a hurdle race, gave a splendid exhibition, running past me opposition three furlongs from home ana scoring comfortably from the Marton-owned Ethiop. Vaaanoe, warm favourite for the Trial Stakes, won as expected, with Malibu returning a good price for second place. Golden Chest managed to beat Airing over tne concluding stages of the Himitangi Hack Handicap, and Youssipoff won the concluding event at quite a good price in an even betting pool. The track was in excellent order and there were no untoward incidents. King Thomond fell on the flat five furlongs from home in the hurdle race and interfered with John Charles and Red Sun. Favourite Wins Trial Stakes. Vadanoe, favourite for the Trial Stakes, won rather well from Malibu. After some delay at the barrier they all got away in line, Aria showing out irom Malibu, Gala, Vadanoe, River Feale and Golden Rill. Aria and Vadanoe piloted the field acros the top, w’ith Gaia, Malibu, River Feale, Royal Choice, Lacey and Aurora’s Love next, but Vadanoe headed Aria at the straight entrance and then came on to win by a length and ahalf from Malibu, with Ana two and a-half lengths back, just in front of Lady Zona. Lacey was next, ahead of Silent Acre, Aurora’s Love and River Feale. Red Manfred’s Hurdles. Contact and Beau Gallante were preferred to Red Manfred in the Poroutawhao Hurdle, but Red Manfred, making his first appearance over the battens in public, won nicely from Ethiop. Iddo jumped to the front at the first flight of hurdles, leading King Thomond, Ethiop, Beau Gallante, Contact, John cnarles, Red Rufus ana Red Manfred past the stands. Beau Gallante took the lead at the five furlongs, just ahead of Iddo, Ethiop and King Thomond, but the last-nam-ed fell on the flat and interfered with Red Sun and John Charles. Then Contact ran into the lead, only to • give way to Red Manfred entering the straight, Ethiop moving up as Contact dropped back. The run to the judge was made easy for Red Manfred witn the last flight of battens down, and he won comfortably by a length and a-quarter from Ethiop. Ten lengths back was Contact, just ahead of Beau Gallante, and then came Iddo, Red Rufus and John Charles. One Whetu’s Sterling Finish. Elected favourite for the Foxton Cup, One Whetu duly won from the outsider, Royal Banquet, with Pukeko third. Windscreen was slow to move out but dashed up to Rona Bay and Royal Banquet passing the stands, with One Whetu, uavistock, Gay Boy, Pukeko, Round Score and Tahurangi following them out ot the straight. Running into the back stretch Windscreen was soon spent, Rona Bay leading Royal Banquet, Davistock ana One Whetu across the top, with Pukeko, Gay Boj and Lapel next. One Whetu headea Royal Banquet in the straight and came on to win by half a length, with Pukeko two and a-hali lengths back, ahead of Lapel, Davistock, Tahurangi, Round Score and Rona Bay. Locally-Trained Winner. \ The favourite in the Himitangi < Hack Handicap, Majory Daw, strucK \ trouble on the home turn and finished ’ well back, Golden Chest winning from » Airing and Eara. Dawning Light moved out ahead of Royal Record, Eara and Golden Chest, but Sporting Gift was then rushed to he front, piloting Eara, Dawning -_ignt, Majory Daw and Royal Recoru along the back. Eara headed Sporting Gift across the. top and Dawning Light, Airing and Golden Chest were next, but Airing was with Eara on the home turn, with Sporting Gift, Golden Chest, Marjory Daw and Fleeting Arrow following in close order. The field bunched at the distance, with Golden Chest coming through to beat Airing by half a length. Two lengths back was Eara, ahead of Sporting Gigt, Fleeting Arrow, and Royal Record, with Diamond Cutter next.
Petrarch Scores Nicely. Petrarch was installed favourite for the Whirokino Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase and duly justified the odds laid on his chances. Croyden and Ctaru King were disputing the lead early but the first time past the stands Croyden led Platter, Petrarch, Otauru King and Royal Fire. After going seven furlongs Petrarch ran to the lead and he and Croyden were in front entering the final circuit. Half a mile from home Petrarch was three lengths ahead of Croyden and Platter, but it was left to the latter to chase the favourite home, Petrarch winning by a length and a-quarter. Five lengths back was Royal Fire, with Battleground and Croyden next to finish. One from Wanganui. Only £6 separated Sir Nigel and Reipar when the tote closed lor the Kebbell Memorial, and Gold Mission and Red Manfred were next in request, the last-named acting as run-, ner-up to Reipar. The Wanganui-owned gelding was first to break the line, wiin Sir Nigel alongside, and Passion Fruit, Hunting Lodge and Gold Mission were nearest of the others. Reipar had a clear lead at the half-mile and showed the way into the straight to Hunting Lodge, Sir Nigel, Red Manfred ana Gola Mission. Over the final st. ges Reipar was doing it nicely to win oy a length from Red Manfred, who was only a head in front of Gold Mission. Then came Hunting Lodge. Sir Nigel and High Test. Y’oussipofFs Good Price. In the best pool of the day Rotoma and the The bandwichman were better backed than the eventual winner, xoussipoif, in the Moutoa Hack Handicap. The Sandwichman got away badly and War Lap led Hreous, Patagonia, Spender, Parakino, Clouay Bay, Golden Rill and Rotoma out of the straight. Half a mile from home The Sanawichman, Youssipoff, and Terry commenced to move up from tne rear. War Lap, Erebus, Parakino, Rotoma and Spender still led Youssipoff ana The Sandwichman at the straight entrance, but the leaders spreaa across the course at the distance and Youssipoff came through to win with ease by two lengths. Rotoma got up to beat Terry by a head for second place, ana Parakino was a close lourth, with Happy Hunting, Patagonia, Naughty Marietta and The Sandwichman next in order.
