CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCHES

“Ancient and Modern Necromancy. Alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced,” was the subject of the lesson-sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday. The golden text was Jer. 15:20, 21, “I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the Lord. And J will deliver thee out of the hand ot the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.” Among the citations which comprised the lesson-sermon were the following from the Bible, “Thus saith the Lord God; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing. Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, the Lord saith it; albeit I have not spoken?” (Eze. 13:3,7). Also the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, “Animal magnetism has no scientific foundation, for God governs all that is real, harmonious, and eternal, and His Power is neither animal nor human. Its basis being a belief and this belief animal, in Science animal magnetism, mesmerism, or hypnotism is a mere negation, possessing neither intelligence, power, nor reality, and in sense it is an unreal concept of the socalled mortal mind.” (p. 102).
