MILLION PASSED
YEAR’S REVENUE FROM TOLES AND TELEGRAMS. Over a million a year is spent by ; New Zealanders in communicating by j telegram, cablegram and trunk tele- i phones. Post Office receipts from i these sources first reached the million mark in 1929, and maintained it for ! another two years. Then, reflecting j world-wide economic conditions the i revenue fell below the million for five ■ years, although in 1936 it was again - approaching it. An increase of £lO4,- 1 433 in gross revenue from telephone i toll calls, cablegrams and tele- , grams m the year ended March 31 1 last, brought the total to £1,058,288. These large figures are even’ more ■ impressive when translated into terms • of telegrams and toll calls, as follows: C Toll messages 13,143,171, telegrams : 5.117.498. In both cases the financial returns demonstrated increased service at’ lessened cost, for the telephone toll I traffic increased nearly 15 per cent., 1; while the revenue rise was just over , 12i per cent. Telegraph traffic in- ( creased by 12 per cent, and the cash : receipts rose by 8.44 per cent. The ' greatest telegraphic increase was 1 shown in connection with urgent mes- i sages, 141,035 having been sent during the year, an increase of 35,327 or 325 < per cent., while the revenue results I went up by just over 28 per cent. |
