FORDELL W.E.A.
NEW SESSION COMMENCES The first meeting of the eighth annual session of the Fordell W.E.A. | was held at the manse las' Monday evening. It was decided to hold the circle at the homes of the various members this year. The course chosen is a series of 12 lectures on New Zealand To-day and To-morrow, the first lecture by Mr. Miller, M.A., being “The Historical Background. ” A lively discussion ensued and some interesting stories of the early days were told and discussed. One member mentioned that he had seen in the early days a party ar Hauhaus passi ing the farm which he now owns. The [ fignt at Moutoa Island and the rights j and wrongs of the Maori wars were discussed. One incident of Maori I humour was mentioned. Sir George | Bowen had offered £lOOO for the head of Titokowaru, so that chief replied by offering 2s 6d for the headpiece of Sir George, a Maori sage remarking that probably these two Rangatiras knew the value of each others heads. A very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with supper and thanks to the host and hostess.
