PUBLIC SCANDAL
FALSE DECLARATION SEVEN MEN FINED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS ( per Press Abaoctation. ] AUCKLAND, May 28. "The matter has become a public scandal," said Mr. Orr Walker, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when seven men were charged with making false statements and obtaining benefits under the Unemployment Act. When such cases first came before him he thought that he had done justice by making the men repay the amounts involved. The position had now become a farce. "I don’t know why the department lays an information under an Act whicn provides no penalty of imprisonment," he continued. "I wish to intimate that in future false declarations will be met by substantial fines, and no time will be given to pay, except in very special circumstances. The result will be that after a few days defaulters will be sentenced under a warrant of commitment. The Court fined the seven men the amounts involved in the frauds, ranging from £6B down to £7. The magistrate said that they could arrange for payment in instalments. i
