IMPERIAL CONFERENCE

ECONOMIC MATTERS NO OTTAWA DISCUSSIONS INDIVIDUAL TALKS SURVEY OF TRADE POSITION (By Telegn ph—Prev Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 27. It was decided at the Imperial Conference to-day that all matters arising from the Ottawa Agreement shall not be discussed at the conference, but shall be subject to bilateral conversations. The political writer of the Australian Associated Press agency learns that it has also been decided that there will be no immediate discussions between Britain and Australia concerning revision of the Ottawa Agreement. The talks between Britain and New Zealand commenced some months ago by Mr. W. Nash are being discontinued, and conversations between Britain and South Africa to revise their Ottawa Agreement will commence in a few days. A new agreement between Britain and Canada was concluded recently. Thus Ottawa virtually disappears from the Imperial Conference agenda. The decision regarding Ottawa was reached when the heads of the delegations held their first meeting in connection with economic questions. Mr. Baldwin presided for the last lime, and he will be succeeded automatically by Mr. Neville Chamberlain, when he assumes the Premiership to-morrow.

The conference first of all decided to include representatives of Southern Rhodesia and Burma on Sir Thomas Inskip’s War Materials Supply Committee. Then it commenced a general review of Empire trade. A very comprehensive statement by the President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Walter Runciman, traced developments in intro-Imperial trade since the Ottawa Agreements and dealt with Britain’s various foreign trade treaties. Mr. Runciman also outlined America’s desire for the Dominions to make sacrifices under the Ottawa Agreements. It is understood, however, that discussions between Britain and the Dominions on the subject will not be initiated immediately within the conference, but will be the subject of informal talks between Britain and each of the Dominions.
