REMARKABLE accidents
DANE AND HIS BICYCLE ELEPHANT FALLS FROM SLING LONDON, April 28. Two extraordinary accidents are reported. An elderly man who was •djustlng a bicycle chain on a lonely road near Holstead, Denmark, was found with his beard entangled in tne crank and unable to free himself. Another cyclist met him crawling backwards and dragging the bicycle. Together they carried the bicycle until they met a man with a sharp knlte who severed the beard. The second accident occurred at Calcutta, when a 51-ton elephant on which a mahout was mounted, fell from the sling in which he was being loaded on the ship. The elephant crashed on to the wharf and sprang up trumpeting. He began to run limping and scattered the terrified L crowd. The mahout, who miraculously escaped serious injury, declares that the elephant saved his life by deliberately rolling away f—m him.
