BRITAIN’S OVERSEAS TRADE
ITS INCREASE RECORDED FIRST QUARTER OF THE YEAR [ British Official Wireless. 1 Received April 29, 8.40 p.m. RUGBY, April 28. The Board of Trade has now calculated the volume of overseas trade in the first quarter of the year compared with the corresponding periods of 1936 and 1935, by a revaluation of the trade of all three periods at the average values 'of the whole of 1935. Comparing the first quarter of this year with the first quarter of last year, exports of the United Kingdom goods increased in volume by 10 per cent, re-exports declined bv 4.5 per cent, and imports increased by 2.5 per cent. There was a record increase of retail trade in March. The total daily sales were 15.2 per cent, higher than in March, 1936. Stocks were 3.7 per cent, higher and employment 3.1 per cent greater.
