EASTER HOLIDAYS

WANGANUI EVENTS COLLEGIATE SCHOOL SPORTS AND REUNION Although Easter in Wanganui this year will not be as busy as that of 1936, when the New Zealand Pipe Band contest was held on Cook’s Gardens, considerable activity will take place. The annual Collegiate School festivities are scheduled to begin on Easter Saturday and conclude the following Tuesday, while the annual tournament conducted under the auspices of the Wanganui Bowling Centre and the St. John’s Tennis Club’s tournament will also be held.

The Wanganui Tourist and Development League is following a practice adopted last year and will publish a pamphlet setting out the various attractions the city has to offer. Included will be a schedule of organised entertainments which are being promoted over the holiday period. These circulars were greatly appreciated by visitors last year and will again be distributed by the league. On Easter Saturday 350 members of the Corsair Club (Christchurch) will arrive by special train from Wellington. They will spend the afternoon sightseeing in the city and district and will leave for New Plymouth at 11.30 p.m. The Wanganui Tourist and Development League has this matter in hand also, and wty arrange for representative citizens to greet the visitors on arrival. The party is expected to reach the city station at 1.52 p.m., and it is probable that a fleet of motor-buses and cars will be awaiting their arrival. The Collegiate School programme is a comprehensive one and visiting old boys from all over the Dominion are expected to be in attendance. These festivities alone attract a large number of visitors to the city each year. The programme has been arranged as follow: — Easter Saturday: 2.30 p.m., commencement of school sports; 8 p.m., concert at the school. Easter Sunday: 7.45 a.m.. Holy Communion; 10 a.m., morning prayer; 7 p.m., old boys’ evening service for school and old boys and their ladies; after chapel the headmaster and Mrs Gilligan will be “at home” in the school dining hall for old boys and their ladies. Easter Monday: 10.30 a.m., continuation of school sports (relay race, School v. Old Boys, tug-of-war, and old boys’ race will take place during the morning); 12 noon, old boys’ meeting in the school music block; 1.15 p.m., old boys’ luncheon in school dining hall: 2.10 p.m., continuation of school sports; 3.30 p.m., the headmaster and Mrs Gilligan will be “at home” to all old boys’ parents and their friends; 4.30 p.m., prize-giving on the field; 8 p.m., old boys’ ball. Tuesday: 9.45 a.m., swimming, School v. Old Boys; 10.15 a.Yn., football, School v. Old Boys. The annual Easter tournament, between Kaierau and Oriental, will be played on Spriggens Park, and as in other years, should attract considerable interest
