NINE WICKETS

COLLEGIATE WINNERS NEW PLYMOUTH B.H.S. MATCH CONCLUDING DAY’S PLAY Half an hour's batting after the luncheon adjournment yesterday sufficed for Wanganui Collegiate School to secure the runs required to register a nine-wicket victory over New Plymouth Boys’ High School in the annual cricket match, played on the Collegiate School ground. When stumps were drawn on the opening day the visiting team, facing a deficit of 32 runs on the first innings, had nine runs on the board lor the loss of one wicket. They resumed yesterday morning and had carried the score to 83 when the last wicket fell, leaving Wanganui with 42 runs required for the win.

The feature of the second innings of the New Plymouth team was me second-wicket partnership of Cook and Diprose, who added 46 runs before they were separated. Following this stand, however, the home bowlers went through the team rapidly, the last seven wickets falling with only 30 runs added to the total. Meuli Look eight wickets for 24 runs. Cook and Diprose eariy indicated that it was their intention to eijdeavour to stay at the wicket as long as possible during the before-lunch period, and the Wanganui attack for a long time proved ineffectual against the good batting of the visiting pair. Runs came rather slowly, though this was mainly attributable to the really good fielding, few errors being made in this department by the Wanganui team. The batsmen proved their ability to score all round the wicket, though most of the runs came from the leg side. Cook’s 14 runs came mainly from singles, but Diprose included one nice four ih his total of 34.

Meuli proved the one to break the partnership, Cook being out leg before with the total at 52. In Meuli's next over and with but one run added to the total Diprose was clean-bowled with a pretty leg break. Price and Moran appeared likely to be associated in a useful knock but when the total had been taken to 65 the fourth wicket went, Moran being caught at deep long on by Collins off Meuli. Moran had made 7 in quick time and looked like getting set when he gave the chance. Crone joined Price but the latter went one run later, another of Meuli’s victims. The same bowler accounted for the newcomer, Duncan, in his next over, with the score still at 66. Moorhead shaped well in his brief .partnership with Crone, but when he had notched six runs he was sent back to the pavilion by Meuli, who had at this stage claimed all seven wickets.

Sisley, a left-handed batsman, was far from comfortable facing the slow left-hand bowler Reynolds, after scoring a single, and when he cocked one up the bowler accepted the chance. Papps scored a brace before having his wicket skittled by Meuli, and Eggleton, last man in, saw four added to the total without opening his account and then was caught and bowled by McNaught, leaving Crone to carry his bat for a total of 8 runs. Meuli’s eight wickets had been secured at a cost of 24 runs, and he had sent down thirteen overs, including three maidens. Though Barraud did not secure a wicket only one run was scored off his bowling, seven of his eight overs being maidens. Evidence of his ability to keep the batsmen quiet was also provided in the first innings, during which he had sent down six overs, three of which were maidens, with only 3 runs scored off his bowling. Moran and Sisley were the bowlers when Reynolds and Shaw took strike for Wanganui in their second innings. Reynolds laid on the wood to such effect that he rapidly ran to doublefigures. Eggleton was brought on instead of Sisley after the latter had sent down two overs, but a separation had not been effected when the luncheon adjournment was taken with the total at 18. Soon after the resumption, however, with the total at 27, Reynolds gave Eggleton a chance which was accepted. Meuli then came in and the pair, with a display of sound batting, rapidly secured the necessary runs to give Wanganui Collegiate School their first outright win in seven years against New Plymouth.
