40-HOUR WEEK
EDUCATION BOARD'S POSITION SHORTAGE OF TRADESMEN A loss of 200 working hours a week with the present staff since the operation of the 40-hour week was reported by the architect, Mr E. R. Hodge, in answer to a question by Mr J. W. Batchelar at yesterday's meeting of the Wanganui Education Board.
Mr Batchelar suggested that the architect might make up this loss by the employment of more workers. “We cannot get men for love or money,” replied Mr Hodge. “There is a very great shortage of tradesmen. The placement office is going to assist us by removing a number of painters and carpenters from the Public Works camp at Fordell.”
