“THEY RUSHED INTO PRINT’
MINISTER’S REPLY TO MEN PUKERAU CAMP ALLEGATIONS 1 Per ?re«« Association I Hamilton, March is. A denial that he had refused to hear a deputation of Public Works men at Pukerau was jnade by the Hon. R. Semple to-day. The Minister said that he had confused the Pukerau camp in his first statement with another camp he visited 40 miles away. He had just learned from Mr P. Keller, Public Works engineer at Dunedin, that while he was ?t Gore two men from Pukerau saw Mr Keller over a complaint, and after discussion they seemed satisfied. Mr Semple said that he visited the district on February 11 and the job had only just started then, so that there would be little time for grievances over any wet weather that took place after his visit.
“Instead of airing their grievances through the proper channels, they rushed into print and blamed me for the wet weather. I am always ready to hear bona fide complaints and put the matter right, but obviously it’s impossible for me to hear minor grievances. That is why the proper machinerv through the engineers is provided.”
