TROTTING

SOUND TESTS VERY INTERESTING WORK EXHIBITION HORSES PLEASE HAROLD LOGAN AND GLENROSSIE (By “Chronicle” Special Recorder.) The keen interest taken in the trials yesterday morning proved to what an extent trotting is growing in popularity locally, and those who visit ed the course were well rewarded, as the work was interesting. The outside of the course proper was available and provided splendid footing, with the result trainers stepped their charges along solidly, although there was no attempt to “track the watches.” Chief interest was taken In the efforts of horses engaged in the Liverpool and Farewell Handicaps, and the dash displayed by the newcomer Aide de Camp pleased the onlookers and drew attention to his prospects. Full Hand also gave a fine showing and appears to be improving with racing. Kenworthy, who will contest tne Farewell Handicap, was responsible for a line effort, and showed speed in the final stages. His admirers were on good terms with the world when they witnessed his final sprinting efforts. The exhibition horses, Glenrossre and Harold Logan, also attracted attention by their speed in short sprints. The old champion, Harold Logan, is looking better for his racing, ancl may give his rival a shock on Saturday. Glenrossie has never looked better, and is keen on avenging his New Zealand Cup defeat by Harold Logan, in his determination to win the three exhibition heats. Should Harold Logan succeed, the o4d veteran will no assured of a wonderful reception from the crowd.

Among the lesser lights, attractive form was shown by Ann Pointer, Mountain Flight, Dusky Chum, Northern Guy, who put energy into their tasks, which suggested that, last week’s racing was well worth while. The trotting section were not backward in their efforts, Reception, Dollar Maid and Biworthy all working well, while Meadow King, who paced in the Wanganui Handicap, and will race to-morrow as a trotter, gave a nice exhibition at the “square gait.’’ First Aid at Two Miles. Activity and First Aid were first out and ran two miles to finish together. Activity made play for the greater part of the journey, but First Aid, who showed some dash in tne last few furlongs, finished strongly to reach her companion. Meadow King, trotting, vvorKca a sound two miles, assisted for the last mile and a-half by Bonnie Direct. The grey gave a good display of trotting, while Bonnie Direct paced very freely. They came home the last half boldly, and both appear to have derived benefit from last week’s racing. | Kenworthy and Native Cole finished | together in front of Roadster, at the • end of a smartly run ten furlongs. Kenworthy trailed Native Cole to the turn, and with a sharp effort drew up level at the finish. He has taken no j harm from his hard race last Saturi day. Broughshane, assisted by Silk Cord over the last seven furlongs, worked a sound mile and a-quarter. The pace increased along the back, Silk Cord setting a lively clip, but he left his feet at the turn, leaving Broughshane, who is improving, to go forward and score a comfortable win. Reception “At Home.” Reception was responsible for a very fine trotting exhibition over two miles, and when allowed to step out on tne last few furlongs showed good speed. She was “at home” on the good track. Loch Levin, a useful novice, neld his own over a mile and a-quarter with Relax, and he gives the impression that he will improve with racing. Cash Down led Accel over the first mile of a mile and a-quarter, out they finished on terms, and in a second heat, Accel did better than her stable mate, who has not had as much experience. Levity was allotted strong work with a couple of sprints. He looks well enough in condition and only needs to go solidly to race usefully. Lady Slipper, after going twice round at an easy pace, sprinted a naif at a sound clip. She showed nice style and no fault can be found wKh her appearance. Loyal Betty put in good work over the last six furlongs of a mile and a-half. She is a fine looking pacer who would probably do well if she could be induced to leave the mark, j Wrackless, in saddle, made the pace j for Dollar Maid for over a mile, wnere he was eased, and the latter went on to finish alone over a mile ana a-half. Dollar Maid made a couple of mistakes, but trotted fast in patches. Wrackless, who, at times, races as a trotter, did his work at the pacing gait. Ann Pointer Shows Speed. Worthy Audubon, Trevor de Cro and Queenie Direct worked soundly over a mile and a-half, maintaining a good rate of speed throughout. In a sharp dash home there was little between ' them and all paced beautifully. Ann Pointer ran a solid mile and after a breather was sent over a similar journey. She showed speed and dash for seven furlongs, but the elfort began to tell and she slackened a little on the final furlong. Transfer went evenly for a mile and a-half but was never doing his best. The race last wek seems to to have sharpened him up. Roman Chief ran a sound mile and a-half and was going comfortably at the finish. He is shaping up well and should soon show improvement. Terraplane was given similar arotments, but was in a lazy mood and loafed along over the last piece. Effie Parrish displayed some dash in a useful dash, while Glorietta, who was not bustled, was keen to h|t out. She looks a picture and should agam | race prominently. Rawley’s Wrack was worked In saddle, and for a time gave Tils rider I

anything but a comfortable ride. Wnen warmed up he trotted gracefully, although a bit “babyish" will improve with experience. Travisque and Truman ran a sound ten furlongs with practically nothing between them at tlie end, both going very resolutely

On the inside track Dorses wno were not out for speed, were given strong work. These included Native Leai, Glen Bingen, Tangaroa, Savoldl, Silver Black, Connenara, and Red Flush. The last-named appeared sore m t„v early stages, bul shook it off after warming up. Aide de Camp in Form.

Full Hand and Decoy Bird le . Aide de Camp lor the major portion ot a mile and a-half, buu wnen the last named was let loose lie sprinted Up to the leader, Full Hand, and held mm safe.

Aide de Camp impressed by his line dash.

Frank Best led Mountain Flight over a mile and a-quarter, but in a repeat-task over the same distance the latter took charge early to win by several lengths. She seems a belter mare and is improving with the work. Biworthy ana Great Chum were always in front ot Juggler during two miles, and nearing the post Great Chum tangled, leaving Elworthy to finish in front. He gave a sound display of trotting. Abyssinian King led Orleigh Mills for six furlongs, wiien the latter moved up smartly, and was doing best at the end of a mile task.

Going away in front of Dusky Chum and Winstar, Northern Guy set a lively pace for a mile and a-quarter, where the other two made a forward move, Winshaw finishing on best to shade Dusky Chum, but Northern Guy was not far behind.

After keeping Hard Lad company for over a mile, Waingake came right away to have an easy victory at tne end of a mile and a-half. He gave a neat display of trotting and maintained a steady gait. With Mr W. Price absent a’ the Wellington racing meeting, his assistant, Mr J. King, released the tapes of the smooth-working Savage barrier last Saturday, and his work was appreciably commented on by arivers As Mr Price will be at Pahiatua tomorrow. Mr King will again be on the starter's stand, and the public can rest assured that everything in this respect will be up to standard. HAWERA CLUB THE EASTER MEETING LIST OF HANDICAPS.
