Meteorological Office, Wellington, Wednesday, March 17, 1 p.m. General Situation.—An intense anti-cyclone still covers the New Zealand area with its centre to the east. Pressure is relatively low to the north and a fairly deep depression is at present centred over south-eastern Australia. Forecast.—Winds: Light to moderate variable winds mainly between south-east and north-east at first, but strong easterlies in lhe far north and, later, winds becoming northerly generally and freshening. Seas (N.Z. waters): Rough north of East Cape; elsewhere, slight to moderate, but rising later in the Cook Strait area. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong east to north-east winds, with rather rough seas. Weather: Fair to cloudy in most districts, but scattered rains still probable in the far northern and north-east-ern portions of the North Island, and cloud gradually increasing generally; mist or fog at times in coastal areas, especially in the South Island; temperatures, rising. The New Zealand Friends’ School. St. John's Hill, report for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, 4 hours 10 minutes. Rainfall, nil. Temperature, maximum 74deg. Fahr.; minimum, 54deg. Fahr. Time of sunet to-day. 6.37 p.m. Time of sunrise to-morrow, 6.22 a.m. Phases of the Moon for March.—Third quarter, March 5; new moon, March 13; first quarter March 19; full moon, March 27.
