RAGWORT PEST
LAND NOT CLEARED. FINES IMPOSED ON FARMERS. LABOUR SHORTAGE PLEADED. The difficuly of performing the work of eradication of ragwort on account of a shortage of labour was advanced as a defence by farmers who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day on charges of failing to keep their land free from ragwort. A noxious weeds inspector employed by the Raglan County Council, Mr. G. H. Webb, stated that all the defendants had received ample notice to clear their land, but had failed to do so. The Government and the local bodies were spending a considerable amount on the eradication, but it would be neutralised without the cooperation of the farmers. Fines of £l, with 12s costs in each case, were imposed on Thomas Dent, of Kauroa, and Frank Magner and A. H. Rollo, of Whatawhata. W. M. Taylor, of Te Mata, was required to pay £3, with costs 12s.
