N.Z. CRICKET TEAM
TOUR OF ENGLAND GRIFFITHS FAILS TO PASS DOCTOR I Per Press Association. I CHRISTCHURCH, March 9. A vacancy has occurred in the New Zealand cricket team for England owing to the withdrawal of B. G Griffiths, the right-hand slow bowter. The following statement was issued this morning by the secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council (Mr F. E. Luttrell): "In connection with the coming English tour B. G. Griffiths has failed to pass the doctor, and the position is now being considered oy the council.” This means that Griffiths will not go to England, and the selectors will have to appoint a man in his place. UNPLEASANT SURPRISE STATEMENT BY GRIFFITHS "A FEW DENTAL DEFECTS" [ Per Press Association. ) WELLINGTON, March n. No intimation regarding his having been withdrawn from the New Zealand team had been received by 3. J. Griffiths from the New Zealand Cricket Council. When his .attention was drawn to the Press Association message the information came as a most unpleasant surprise to hrm. He had been examined by more than one doctor, he stated, and had been given to understand that there was nothing physically wrong with nis condition except for a few dental defects. GALLICHAN’S CHANCE MAY FILL VACANCY? HOPE IN MANAWATU [ Per Press Association, j PALMERSTON, March S. 1 “It is difficult to know what to ao,” declared Mr A. M. Ongley, president, to-riight when, the matter of N. Gallichan filling a vacancy In the team to go Home was mentioned at a meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Cricket Association. Mr Ongley added that it was unfortunate for Gallichan that, aften ten years’ good cricket, he should have missed three trips. Not only in Mana watu but throughout the Dominion his non-inclusion was commented on, but the speaker could not see how the association could do anything. There was a vacancy in the team for a slow bowler, and it would be noped that Gallichan would get the position, but the matter was in the hands of the selectors. An opportunity was given them to repair the omission, but there was no guarantee that Gallichan was going to fill the vacancy, much as he it. No doubt
it would give a great deal of satisfaction throughout the Dominion ft Gallichan were selected at this stage.
