FIDEA DEFENSOR
A T the forthcoming Coronation the King of England will rctain the title of Defender of the Faith. This title is deemed by some people to be a sort of declaration of the Protestant faith of the Kings of England. Its history is, however, not quite in keeping with that. view. The title was conferred on Henry VIII by Pope Leo X as a reward for writing his Assertio Septem Sacrementorum, in answer to Luther. The title was afterwards confirmed by Parliament by the Statute 35, Henry VIII, Chap. 3, and has. ever since been used by the Sovereigns of England. Equivalent titles have been conferred by the Papacy on other Kings, for instance the ex Kings of Spain canned the title “Most Catholic,” while the Kings of France carried the title “Most Christian King.” What is precisely meant by the present title of King Defender of the Faith, would certainly be difficult to discover; and whether it has any significance at all may well be doubted. It is interesting as a link with the past, but more than that can hardly be said with any historical authority.
