HOW THEY MUST BE HOUSED REGULATIONS GAZETTED PROVISIONS OF NEW ACT [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. Regulations dealing with accommodation for agricultural workers under the Agricultural Workers’ Act were issued to-night. They provide that separate accommodation must be provided where both male and female workers are employed. The site must be suitable for the purpose and must be properly drained and a sufficient distance from animal pens, stables and accumulations of refuse or offensive matter and shall preferably be well sheltered and kept clear of overgrowing vegetation. The floor must consist of wood, or other approved material, and have at least six inches clearance from the ground. The walls must be lined and so constructed as to exclude wind and water. Sleeping rooms must provide not less than sixty square feet floor space for each occupant and shall be not less than eight feet height in any part. Not more than two persons shall be required to sleep in one room. Each bunk or bed must be provided with spring mattress, or a mattress of chaff, straw or kapoc. Suitable heating appliances, lighting and ventilation must be provided. Sanitation provisions are also set out and if steam is used showers, with hot and cold water, shall be provided for workers. Provision is also made for temporary accommodation and, except where only one person is accommodated, no person shall sleep in the dining or cooking quarters.
