TROTTING

RACE INTERVALS RESCISSION OF RULE DRIVING FEES DEVISED A special meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference wil be held in Wellington on February 24, when the executive will move that the ruie which stipulates a 35-minutes interval between races be rescinded and the following substituted: —"li\ no programme of any race meeting, any day of which falls within the period from May 7 in one year to August 31 in the next succeeding racing year, shall the starting time of the last race on any such day be fixed for a time later than 20 minutes before sunset.” The executive will also attempt to have deleted rule 245, which deals with horsemen’s riding, and driving fees, and to have substituted the following:—

‘ In the absence of any special agreement to the contrary the fees payable to horsemen in relation to the net amount payable to the owner of the winner shall be:

"To winning horseman: In no case less than 12. If the net amount does not exceed 1200, 15 per centum thereon. If the net amount exceeds £2OO, £5 per centum on the £2OO and £2 10s per centum on the excess. To losing horseman: In no case less than £l. If the net amount exceed £3O, but not £lso—£2. If the net amount exceed £150»-£3.” The introduction of the latter rule will make a big difference in the earnings of horsemen, for previously a losing rider or driver was paid as little as 10s, and no provision was made for a bigger fee than £2. The fee for a winning horseman was not less than £2. and if the net amount payable to the owner did not exceed £2OO he was entitled to 3 per cent, of the stakes. In a race exceeding £2OO the driver or rider was paid 3 per cent, up to £2OO and 2 per cent, on the excess. THAT SHORT HEAT ADELAIDE CHAMPIONSHIPS The opening of the Championship Carnival at Adelaide was somewhat marred when the first division of the 2min. 12sec. event, by some unfortunate circumstance was tolled a lap too soon, and when the time of 2min. 5 l-ssec. was announced it did not take long to realise that the distance traversed was not the necessary ten furlongs, says the Trotting Record. As is now history, Lawn Derby, in a brilliant burst of speed, got up in time to wrest victory from Speedy Boy, and patrons were not slow to do homage to- a truly great pacer. However, the news was soon broken regarding the short distance, the stewards decided it was no race, and all bets were declared off. This decision caused a lot of heartburning, as though a careful percentage may hang on to their tickets, the average person drops the tote or bookmaker's ticket as soon as the horses pass the post. In 99 cases out of JOO .this is a safe procedure, but Wednesday night was the exception. Any ticket, providing it was on that particular event, was a good source of profit to the finder. As a sequel to the unfortunate blunder the race was re-run at the conclusion of the programme. For a long time Mr. J. E. Mackenney argued that his horse had won the race, and did not feel disposed to start his pacer again. However, his good sportsmanship prevailed, and Lawn Derby started as favourite in the field of eleven.

Fate again proved unkind, as Lawn Derby did not start at all smartly, and was soon in a very rear position. Once he struck his straps he came with a phenomenal run, but the judge was too close to allow him to get nearer than fourth, though he covered himself with glory in the attempt. The first money was earned by Kernel Lu (scr.) in the minor places. In the ’’no race” Speedy Boy was second and Evicus unplaced.
