RAGWORT AT KAIIWI

Sir,—In your issue of to-day's date appears a local referring to the spraying of ragwort in the Kai Iwi district, in which it is stated that the spraying has not been effective. Before making a sweeping statement of this nature, reflecting on the men doing the work, the writer should have inquired into the conditions obtaining when the particulai- piece to which he referred was treated. With the dry dusting method which is being employed this year, the treatment is not so effective in windy or cold weather and these conditions possibly prevailed when this land was treated. To see the full effect of this treatment applied in favourable weather, Mr. Alexander, of the Rangitatau East Road, Kai Iwi, invites anyone to inspect the river flats on his place which were treated about a fortnight ago. A lot of ragwort now flowering is second growth, which it was Impossible to reach when the land was first treated. I might mention that the men working with me have performed their duties in a thoroughly conscientious manner and there has been no slumming on any of the properties treated. In conclusion, I would state that to make a complete clearance it is necessary, in my opinion, to go over the land two, or even three times.—l am, etc., P. W. BOSWELL, Foreman, No. 1 Gang. Wanganui, Feb. 8, 1937.
