WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The Hunterville Women’s Institute met on Wednesday, Mrs R. A. Gordon presiding over a good attendance. Mrs Gordon introduced Mrs Guinnane, the voluntary organiser for this district, who spoke on the aims and objects of the institute. The competition winners were:— Salad. Miss Wilton 1, Mrs Burnett 2, Mrs Lumsden 3: preserved fruit. Mrs Burnett 1. Mrs Shindler 2. Mrs Small 3; guessing competition. Miss Moira Dynch and Miss Turrell. Nominations for the new committee were then taken and further nominations close with the secretary on the 13th. Programme for the March meeting: Hostesses, Mesdames M. Shindler, Taylor, Thompson, and Misses J. McLachlan and J. Stratford. Visiting committee: Mesdames Paul. Ross, Shindler, and W. Shindler. Competition: Prettiest baby’s frock (not smocked). CRICKET ORK CUP MATCH Hunterville defeated Wanganui Marist on the local ground during the week-end in the Ork Cup series, the visitors going under by nine wickets. Baker and Towers formed a deadly attack in the first innings, the former taking five wickets for 19, and the latter four for 30, dismissing the whole side for the small total of 52. Hunterville went to the wickets and fared very little better, the last wicket failing at 61. Baker (11). Bowick (12). and extras 11 being the only double figures. Manley, five for 17, was responsible for all the damage. In the second innings. Marist improved only slightly, and the last wicket fell for 85, Towers taking four for 31, Hallwood four for 26, and Baker two for 11. Hayward (42), and Powell (22 not out) started well, and the game was practically won when Havward departed to'allow White to make the winning hit. scoring three and seeing the total reached. TENNIS Eighteen local players visited Bulls during the week-end and received a beating from the home side hv 21 sets M 11. PUKEROA SPORTS ANNUAL EVENT The Pukeroa Settlers’ Sports Association held its annual sports on January 30. The weather was very threatening during the morning, but by noon there was bright sunshine, which gave visitors a pleasant day. The jumping proved very exciting and visitors very interested during events. The tug-o’-war teams ' also had an exciting time. Public Works trying their strength against the Pukeroa boys, with the result a win to the local team. In the evening a dance was held in the hall and so finished a pleasant outing.
