CRUELTY TO CATTLE
HERD LEFT UNMILKED. MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINE. DARGAVILLE, Feb. 5. Charged with cruelly ill-treating 26 cows, John Joseph Powell, senr., slaughterman and farmer, of Dargaville, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M. It was alleged that the herd had not been milked for two days. Fairleigh Marriener, farmer, of Naumai, stated that he noticed the cows in a paddock. He went the next day, with an inspector of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Constable Du Temple, to Powell’s farm, and saw some cows in a paddock. They were obviously in distress, bellowing and with their udders distended. Constable Du Temple said he obtained a statement from accused, who admitted the offence. Accused denied showing cruelty, and claimed that condemned tubercular cows dried off. Alexander Crabb, stock inspector, stated that he visited accused’s farm on the morning of November 23, when he considered that the cows were not in distress, and he did not know whether or not they had been milked. Accused was convicted and fined £2 and costs.
