SUPPLY OF POWER

GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS TEMPORARY RENEWALS IN THE MEANTIME MINISTER TO STUDY THE POSITION [ Per Pres* Association. ] WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. Power boards or other public bodies whose contracts with the Government expire in the near future will be given only temporary renewals, according to a statement made by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, this evening. “This year I am going to make a full study of the problem of electric power supply,” said the Minister. “Until now I have not had time to give it the consideration it merits. I went, this year, to go into the whole matter scientifically and will consider the supply of electric power for both city and country districts. I am not satisfied with the present system. There are leakages and weak links in many places. It is a highly technical subject and great care must be taken in any step made. I want to go to Australia and see the big systems In operation there and, until careful consideration has been given and a policy definitely decided upon, only temporary arrangements can be made with local bodies for the supply of power.”
