COMPULSORY TESTS

VEHICLES FOR THE ROAD MINISTER IS INSISTENT MANY ARE FOUND UNFIT (Per Pre-18 Association. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 8. “Motorists are required by legislation passed during the last session of Parliament to have vehicles tested and passed as fit for the road before March 31.” the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, said this evening. He was determined that every car should be tested before being allowed to continue on the road. He had thought that selection of March 31 as the last day would give sufficient time for testing, but he did not now intend to adhere rigidly to that date. The Transport Department was extremely busy with tests and in reasonable cases an extension of time would be allowed. “It is most significant,” Mr Semple added, “that the majority of vehicles the department has tested so far have been found unfit for the road and requiring adjustments.”

The Minister said that the law provided a maximum charge of five shillings for the testing of cars. If there was any suggestion of price cutting, steps would be taken to eliminate It. ACCLIMATISATION MATTERS MINISTER IN ROTORUA AREA STATE GAME FARM VISITED ( Per Press Association. I ROTORUA, Feb. 8. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, is at present visiting this district, where he proposes to inspect a number of matters affecting acclimatisation activities and also to confer with his officers regarding fishing and shooting matters in the area under their control. To-day, the Minister, accompanied by Mr J. Bennett, officer in charge of the fisheries and game branch of the department, visited the recently-es-tablished State game farm at Ngongotaha, where the party expressed complete satisfaction with the work being carried out. Although an unavoidably late start was made with breeding operations it is antitcipated that upwards of one thousand birds will be ready for liberation at the farm before next shooting season.
