DUKE’S WEDDING

EXPECTED TO BE IN MAY MRS. SIMPSON SHOPPING PURCHASING HER TROUSSEAU (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 7. The Mayor of Cannes told the Sunday Referee that he expects the Duke of Windsor and Mrs Simpson to marry there early in May. Reports from Vienna state that the marriage will be at the British Legation there on May 2. The Referee says that Mrs Simpson i® shopping daily at Cannes buying her trousseau, but in accordance with the Duke of Windsor’s wish, most of the gowns will be bought from Br/ish firms. Mrs Simpson is said to have recovered her former good spirits. She asked two Hungarian pianists afa recent dinner party at Monte Carlo to play “Tchitt Tchitt Tchitt.” a tune associated with her visit to Budapest with the Duke of Windsor last year. The Duke is reported to have placed an order for jewellery with a Paris firm. It is believed the Princess Royal will be the bearer of the family plans for a settlement of the Duke of Windsor’s personal finances. DUCHY OF CORNWALL REVENUES MAY GO TO STATE. FIXED SUM FOR THE DUKE. Received Feb. 9, 12.6 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 8. The Morning Post’s political correspondent says that the Select Committee to consider the King’s Civil List will discuss the quesl»on of transferring the Duchy of Cornwall revenues to the Treasury and, in return, a Government payment of a similar but fixed annual sum to the Duke of Windsor will not cause surprise, if the King signifies his willingness to surrender control of the revenues, which are about £119,000 yearly. They have been the birthright of the Heir Apparent since 1336. The King will obviously be unable to lake the same interest in the Duchy as his predecessor; nor has he had the opportunity of maintaining close contact.

It is felt in some quarters that it is not desirable to risk the King’s private property becoming involved in a political controversy.
