PENSION FOR DUKE

COMMONS DISINCLINED RELIEF IN KING’S CIVIL LIST LONDON, Feb. 5. The Manchester Guardian's political correspondent says that Government soundings of members of the House of Commons revealed a disinclination to vote the Duke of Windsor a direct pension. This does not imply that no recognition of the former King should be provided for, but relief could be provided in the present King's existing Civil List. A cablegram published yesterday quoted the Daily Herald’s diplomatic correspondent as saying that the question of whether the Duke of Windsor should be granted an annual income from the public funds was creating Ministerial anxiety. The Government proposal was reported to be that the Duke of Windsor’s allowance should be included in the new Civil List, but as it was evident that this would encounter considerable opposition in the House of Commons, the Government might be compelled to consider other means. One widely-supported suggestion was that the King himself should make private provision for his brother. OFFER FROM INDIA PRINCES TOLD THAT IT IS UNNECESSARY. LONDON, Feb. 5. The New Delhi representative of the British United Press agency says that political officers in the various States told the Princes that their offer to provide the Duke of Windsor with resources as a token of their affection was unnecessary.
