AUCKLAND HORSES
FORM FOR TAKAPUNA DISPLAYS AT THAMES (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Jan. 27. One of the most unproved hacks In this district is King Theo, who leu practically all the way in the Hack Cup contest at Thames on Saturday, finally winning well wnen hard pressed. He is engaged in middle distance events at tne Takapuna fixture at Ellerslie this week and he should show up, even with the class much superior to that he met a. Thames. Vera Acre won the hack mile rather comfortably on the opening day at Thames, but on the soconu day she was badly tailed off in the first quarter. Her chance was never other than hopeless, although it was surprising to llnd her poking up inio fifth place at the judge, anjl not so far away either. Vera Acre seems to be back at her best form and so long as she stands itf> to her work she win win again soon. Lagoon’s Double Lagoon has a great liking lor the track at 'inanics, lor she won the Goldlields Cup mere the lust uay twelve months ago and on the secoiu day she lost many lengths at the start, being a good tiling beaten. Las. week she won both the mile races with the 8.0 minimum, a feature ox her two efforts being tne dash sue put in at the end. Lagoon looked like getting beaten at the distance on Saiu.day, but her rider got to work anu she went away again. She is a distinct possibility in the handicap events at Ellerslie this week.
--e has a 10l of speed and as she new seems to be running on bitter she may not be long beiore she scores again. She went a good race into second place over six furlong;, the first day at Thames, only going under to La Femme Noire, who pullea out her best effort to date. A 51b concession for this defeat saw the tab ex reversed on Saturday, when Paluetre defeated the black mare, and tne manner in which she hung on was impressive. Palustre will win open sprints on the provincial circuit in the autumn.
The maiden fields at the Takapuna meeting have been reduced by three consequent upon Strathire, Macleion and Glen Abb winning at Thames, which rendered them ineligible to run. However, there are still many maiden candidates about for El.erslie this week. Trainer R. S. Bagby, who seems to be developing a habit of winning this class of race, has two notable candidates in Raepata and Tidewaite, so without Glen Abb he will still have a chance of adding to his record on Friday and Saturday, especially as Jack Tar may come in on the second day.
