WANGANUI CUP

SUMMER MEETING OPENS TO-DAY PROSPECTS IN VARIOUS FIELDS By “Kestrel.” Weather prospects appear to be bright for the summer meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club, which is to be held to-day and Saturday, and that should be one of the factors making for the success of this old-established fixture. Fields in the eight events are fairly even and some good racing is promised. The principal event to-day is the Wanganui Cup, with twelve engaged. In addition there is the Flying Handicap, while hack events over various distances, a hurdle race and a juvenile event will provide ample fare for the racegoer. A review of the prospects in the programme for to-day may provide useful suggestions.

WESTMERE HACK HURDLES iOf £130; one mile: 4| furlongs.) A field of five is poor response for a stake of more than £lOO for the winner. Beau Gallante appears to stand out because he carried 10.11 for a comfortable win at Otakl last month after having won at Trentham October meeting. Court Arma won at Wanganui last September with 9.2 and did it nicely. Just An Idea is inclined to be unsound, though at his best he was useful. Royal Routine should be a useful recruit for he has always shown a good deal of pace on the flat. Kitty Quin may surprise, but the issue may be between Beau Gallante, Court Arma. JUVENILE HANDICAP (Of £100; five furlongs.) As in the opening race, the topweight here has the best form, for Aiwai won the Avondale Stakes and then went on to Trentham to win the Roseneath Handicap under 8.1. beating Brunhilde anj several other good ones. Lickem and Trim are from the stable of O. Cox, Hawera, and Trim is the half-sister by Lackham to Lowenberg, whose colours she carries. Fafner is reported to be smart, and Amatory has shown pace on the local tracks. Scarf Dance, as a full-sister to Veilmond and Limond Lad, must appeal, especially as she has been getting through her preparations satisfactorily. Airini may go well but one comes back to Aiwai, Scarf Dance, Trim. KAI IWI MAIDEN (Of £100; six furlongs.) This is a very weak field, for usually there are several “maiden” performers with fairly attractive records at this stage of the season, as for instance last year’s winner, Supreme Court, and Reipar a year earlier. Of the two Wanganui candidates, Parakino and Koura Rua, the former is preferred, and Kia Tere, a promising Captain Bunsby three-year-old, may also be in the picture. Black Fox must appeal on breeding, for he is by Nigger Minstrel from the Finland mare Table Talk, dam of High Falutin’, Round Table and Corroboree. Te Broney is also well spoken of, but a preference may be expressed for Black Fox, Parakino, Kia Tere. VICTORY HACK HANDICAP (Of £130; eight and a-half furlongs.) Here is one of the best fields of the day. Taitoru was a most consistent performer in the spring, one of his wins being registered over a mile at Trentham with 8.7 in the saddle, and he was second in the Stratford Cup. Airing, however, must be awarded the palm for consistency, for he has had several wins since commencing at the beginning of the season. He is also in the Cup field. Red Sand was the unlucky runner in the Hack Cup at the Ashhurst meeting last Friday, when he finished third to Waipiro and Cloudy Bay. Mister Quex scored a double at Ashhurst. Corowa has not had much luck lately and Reipar should be improved as a result of his Ashhurst run. International is accounted good enough to be included in Fryer’s team for Australia next month. Missal has been getting through her work satisfactorily, and Blue Mauritius went well in the lead for five furlongs of the Trial Plate at Trentham last Friday. Apprentices will be in the saddle in this race, J?ut well served in this respect th? best may be Red Sand, Airing, Mister Quex. TAYFORTH HACK HANDICAP (Of £110; 7| furlongs.) As this race is run over the former N.Z. Eclipse Stakes distance it should provide an interesting tussle, with the pace likely to be on all the way. Waipiro has won as recently as Ashhurst. Hatuma has been very consistent, one of his wins being over a mile at the Masterton spring meeting. Sanhedrim impressed by three solid displays at Trentham last week, including a win on the middle day. Great Hope commenced by winning the maiden race at Feilding in November but took on stronger company at Ellerslie without success. Still, he is a good sort. As Cloudy Bay beat all but Waipiro at Ashhurst she may be in the picture, and Nightlass and Mazzini may also have friends. Three that appeal are Sanhedrim, Great Hope, Hatuma. WANGANUI CUP (Of £250; one mile and a-quarter.) Both as regards size and quality this is a satisfactory field. One W’hetu has perhaps the best record of the twelve contestants, scoring several wins, including the Cornwall Handicap, last season. His recent form has not been encouraging, but he should be in the picture. Grand Jury, last year’s winner of the race, showed a return to form when he won at Ashhurst last Friday, so he cannot be dismissed as a past number yet. Refresher was the winner of the principal event at New Plymouth on Boxing Day and carries his age well. Limbohm has won in Australia and New Zealand, including the Marangai Handicap at Wanganui eighteen months ago. Entail is coming back to the form that enabled him to beat Greek Shepherd in the N.Z. St. Leger last season. Musquil is useful and Hunting Queen may do better here than in her holiday essays. Airing will not be disgraced if started, and Geitel and Master Cyklon may be best of the others on the minimum. They may be summed up thus: Entail, Grand Jury, One Whetu. FLYING HANDICAP (Of £150; six furlongs.) The small sprint field is dominated by Royal Secret, whose recent wins at New Plymouth and Ashhurst suggest that she will be hard to beat today. Pin Money must have a chance if he has not been set back too much by his attack of colic. Lavina has been showing up prominently and Symcony has done some good work at Awapuni. Black Friar has been given a great chance as a three-year-old of class on the minimum, and Ned Cuttie is not outclassed. The public may sum them up thus: Royal Secret, Sym cony, Ned Cuttie. PETRE HACK HANDICAP (Of £120; six furlongs.) Rustem was a winner over this distance at the Levin spring meeting and has been consistent. Mister Quex won a good double at Ashhurst, and Sanhedrim, if reserved for this event, might be hard if he can handle a turning course. Collodion has been shaping well, and Golden Enterprise may not be far away, his spring form having been fairly good. Favourites may be. in the absence of Sanhedrim, Rustem, Mister Quex, Imposture.
