The Australian lawn tennis championships have reached the quarterfinals, following being the results:— Men’s Singles. Bromwich- beat Turnbull (South Australia), 6-2, 6-2, 6-0. Crawford beat Schwartz (South Australia) 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. McGrath beat A. Kay (Victoria), 6- 6-2, 8-6. Hopman defeated Quist, 11-9, 3-6, 7- 6-3. The last result was a complete surprise. Hopman outgeneralled Quist with clever variations of his game, which upset Quist, causing him to lose much of his customary accuracy. Crawford, owing to being less enthusiastic than his young opponent, went perilously close to being beaten. Bromwich, rapidly playing himself into Davis Cup team, outplayed Turnbull at all stages, losing only four games. The doubles quarter-finals winners were Misses J. Hartigan and M. Blick, Misses V. Selwin and A. Hattersley, Misses T. Coyne and N. Wynne, and Mrs. Westacott and Mrs Hopman.
