ON AWAPUNI TRACKS

TRENTHAM PREPARATIONS GALLOPS ON TUESDAY The weather was not at all pleasant for track work at Awapuni on Tuesday and the tracks were heavy as the result of very heavy rain, which fell during Monday night and again on Tuesday morning. The course proper was open and the flags were fairly close to the rails. ' One of the first to work was Alby, a recent addition to George New’s string, and with G. Tattersall in the saddle, Alby completed the concluding five furlongs in 1.8 2-5. Ingenuity, entered for the Wellington Cup. was kept down to a bit better than half pace for a couple of rounds and finished off by sprinting down the home stretch. Dawning Light (L. A. Pine) was worked over six furlongs but she was not given her head until approaching the straight and she was timed to cover the last two furlongs in 27 2-5 sec.

Dungarvan (L. A. Pine) had Limbohm (G. Tattersall) as a companion over a mile on the course proper. They were on terms for the first five furlongs and crossing the top LimI bohm was the pacemaker. DungarI van, however, made another effort in the straight and he was doing better than Limbohm at the post. The full journey occupied 1.54 2-5. It is understood that L. A. Pine will ride Dungarvan at Trentham.

Martara’s companion was Tosh (C. Thomson) and their task was a fivefurlong scamper, with Tattersall up on Martara. The Derby candidate was not out after time and he was kept with Tosh, though anxious to do his best. They were clocked to run the first two in 26 and completed the five in 1.6 2-5.

Symcony (Pine) was sprinted half a mile, most of it down the back stretch, and she cut the distance out in 53 2-5.

Patter (Chisholm) was no good to Cloudy Bay (Tattersall) over the concluding stages of a six furlong flutter, Cloudy Bay drawing right away as they approached the finishing line. The time for the full distance was 1.23 after they had required 55 1-5 for the first half mile.

Lady Ina (Thomson) scampered over three furlongs in 42 2-ssecs. moving nicely though not required to do her best.

Pango (B. Brown), giving away a bit of weight, had Orac (Tattersall) as a companion over seven furlongs, and Pango, galloping very solidly, had the better of it at the finish. The first half mile took 52 2-ssec, and the full distance 1.36 3-5.

Wild Flower (Brown) was not extended to cut half a mile out in 55sec. She looks well.

Corroboree (Chisholm) sprinted six furlongs in 1.22, and he pulled up well. He seems to have got over the trouble which gave him the enforced spell.

Tail Light has rejoined L. Knapp’s string and with L. Parkes in the saddle, and a Sky Blue—Markful colt as a companion, sprinted two furlongs in 27 3-ssec. Another horse to rejoin Knapp’s active brigade is the steeplechaser, Forest Glow, who is to be prepared for another winter programme.

REMARKABLE FIELDS NON-'TOTE MEETING An exceptionally strong class of horse is engaged at the Ngaruawahia non-totalisator meeting to be held on Saturday. Among the 16 entrants for the Cup are Tradesman, Loombination, Sergia, Tuaheahe, Wahine Reihi, Mungukaha and several other well known performers, while the other six (two trots) races have drawn equally good fields. Next to the Cup the smallest field of the day is the Ladies’ Bracelet, which has drawn 19 entries. There are 22 in the maiden, 21 In each of the trots, 23 in the open sprint and 24 in the hack cup—surely remarkable fields for a non-’tote meeting.
