ATHLETIC MEETING

NEW PLYMOUTH ANNUAL EVENT. VISITING CHAMPIONS COMPETE. With the exception of one or two events, notably the three miles cycle, handicapping was excellent for the athletic meeting held at Pukekura Park on Saturday night and close . finishes resulted. Notable visitors at ' the park were F. J. Sharpley (Hawke’s Bay), New Zealand 120 yards and 220 yards hurdles champion, and C. Melligan (Christchurch), present holder of the New Zealand 440 yards hurdles championship and co-holder with Sharpley of the 120 yards hurdles record. Sharpley gave an exhibition of hurdling over 100 yards, and the two competed in races as well. The attendance was rather poor, but the high quality of the meeting was much appreciated.
