DAMAGED BY FIRE

HOUSE IN CITY AREA CONTENTS DESTROYED OCCUPIERS’ MISI-'ORTI N E A four-roomed wooden house, located at No. 21 Niblett Street, anti occupied by Mr and Mrs R. J. Horne, was badly damaged by fire yesterday morning, and its contents were destroyed. The Central Fire Station received a call from a street alarm at 10.19 a.m., but in spite of the brigade’s prompt response the dwelling was a mass of Hames when the machine arrived. Furniture and clothing were all destroyed, ana the occupants lost considerably. How the outbreak occurred is not known. From information gleaned yesterday it is understood that Mrs Horne was in the back garden when the fire was first noticed. Her attention was attracted by the screaming of a child and on looking up sne was horrified to find the house in flames. An infant, sleeping in a cot, was hurriedly rescued and carried out just in time. The fire probably started in the kitchen and spread rapidly. The building was a fairly old one, and the ceiling was soon ablaze. In a very short time the other rooms were ignited and in spite of the brigade’s efforts considerable damage resulted before the conflagration was subdued. The house is owned by the Public Trust, but details of insurance were not available last night. It is understood that the furniture was not insured.
