WILLIAMSON SAVOYARDS
VISIT TO WANG AN LT GILBERT AND SULLIVAN Judging by the interest already being shown throughout the Dominion over the forthcoming tour of Nev.Zealand by the J. C. Williamson Gilbert and Sullivan Company (commencing in Auckland on Monday, December 28) the success of th? return visit is assured. Desnite the passing of the years, there is always a feeline: of pleased expectancy before a Savoyard evening, and a delightful feeling of fulfilment at the final curtain. There has never been a more competent company of Gilbert, and Sullivan exponents than the present Williamson coterie of stars, and New Zealand devotees of the whimsical operas with their never-forgot-ten tunes and quips, have a specially warm regard for such excellent artists as Ivan Menzies, Strella Evelyn Hall, Godfrev Stirling. Bernard Manning, Helen Langton, Eileen Kelly. Gregorv Stroud, Richard Wa 4 - son, Clifford Cowley and Tommy lav. After Auckland, where the s n aon ends on January 13. the comnany will olay at Hamilton on January 14; New Plymouth. January 15; Wanganui. January 16: Palmers'on Nor'h, January 18-19; Hastings, January 2021; Masterton. January 22; Wellington, January 23 to February 4. Ban on Negro Play. The Paul Green play "Hymn to lhe Sun” has been banned for production in Chicago, as being “vile and treasonable.” It deals with the Southern negroes and the chain-gang system, and until some of its dialogue and situations are toned down, it will apparently be forbidden. Another interesting angle to play-banning in Illinois is that the Sinclair Lewis yarn “It Can’t Happen Here” is not popular with the authorities in Chicago, Mayor Kelly, who last year t\?;< "Tobacco Road" off the boards in tnc middle of a highly-successful run and who prohibited the entry of "Children’s Hour,” is antagonistic to "It Can’t Happen Here.” * * * * Wesley Ruggles, who is producing as well as directing "Valiant is the Word for Carrie” for Paramount Studios, has the reputation of discovering more stars than any Hollywood executive. Jack Oakie, Arline Judge Irene Dunne, Clark Gable and Fred Mac Murray are among his discoveries
