WAITOTARA
REWARD FOR BRAVERY A unique function in this district was held recently to do honour to Master Derek Thorburn, who has been awarded the Royal Humane Society's Certificate for bravery in rescuing a young girl Elizabeth Barnard, from drowning. There was a large attendance of residents and Mr. M. W. Watson (chairman of the School Committee) congratulated Master Thorburn on his bravery and stressed the fact that the awards of the society are in every wav well merited.
Master Thorburn very briefly and modestly replied. Mr. R. Adams, captain of the Patea Life-saving Club, gave a most instructive and interesting talk on life-sav-ing, which was much appreciated by the gathering.
The certificate, which hSd not come to hand in time for presentation at this function, has since arrived and it has been handed over to Master Thorburn. Mr. Watson is making arrangements for the certificate to be on exhibition in Waitotara.
