GENERALLY FIRM
LONDON BUTTER MARKET LONDON, Dec. 13. The butter market is generally firm but has continued featureless. Demand is very quiet, but there is an attempt to stabilise the market at present values, although there seems to be no prospect of much alteration In the immediate future. The extra weight of arrivals around about Christmas is likely to lead to lower prices early in the New Year, with a possibility of a more stable market, giving safer ground for buyers to operate. The market for cheese is also lower, but there is a temporary scarcity of New Zealand and this has led to a small recovery. The outlook for cheese, however, is, like that of butter, for both are uninteresting markets with a prospect of lower values in the New Year. The butter market in London is quiet, according to information supplied by arrangement with the Primary Products Marketing Department and wholesale prices at close of business on Thursday were uncharged from the previous week. The cheese market is steady at a slight increase. Wholesale quotations for butter are: New Zealand, salted, 104 s a cwt, compared with 104 s last week and 87s to 88s at the corresponding period last year; unsalted, 112 s to 113 s; Australian, 101 s to 102 s; Danish, spot, 116 s to 118 s. The amount of New Zealand butter in store is 4047 tons, compared with 3608 tons at the corresponding date last year. Wholesale cheese quotations are:— New Zealand, white and coloured, 63s 6d a cwt and up to 64s for extra line quality, compared with 62s to 63s last week and 51s 6d to 52s last year; Canadian, 70s to 725.
