INQUIRIES BY DETECTIVES

[ Per Press Association. 1 AUCKLAND, Dec. 14. Six detectives are inquiring into the circumstances of the death of the former well-known jockey John Tilsley, 42, married, of Nelson Avenue, who was found dead in the goods lift of the City Chambers at 9.15 on Saturday night. The body was discovered on the floor of the lift by the caretaker of the building, L. Carr, who communicated with the police. The deceased had been injured on the head and arms, and it is believed his neck was broken. Although the detectives’ inquiries have failed to show how he met his death there is reason to believe that while ascending in the lift he was jammed between the side of the lift and the plaster wall of the building, and then fell back on the floor of the lift, which is one of the old type operated by pulling a rope. Tilsley was in the habit of visiting the building fairly frequently. In 1914 Tilsley rode Te Onga when that horse won the Great Northern Hurdles, and had been on relief work during the last two years. He was married with five young children. An inquest was opened to-day by Mr Hunt, coroner, and after identification by a brother, Robert Tilsley, was adjourned sine die for a post
