COMBATING RAGWORT

CONTROL SCHEME OPERATING WANGANUI DISTRICT ACITVm A number of men are employed in the Wanganui district under the ragwort control scheme which has been inaugurated by the Department ol Agriculture. The scheme applies to various classes of native, unoccupied, and Crown lands, and some areas of private land. It provides a means ol absorbing a good deal of unemployed labour. Quite good work is being done in the Wanganui, Waitotara, and Patea Counties. The men employed are under county control, the work being done under tne supervision of the district stock inspectoi. A special weed killer is being used. After several tests had been made it was discovered that pumice sand was an excellent spreader, and when mixed with the weed killer at a strength of ten to one made a mixture handy and safe to use. Its effect are reported to be deadly, the mixture being simply custed on the foliage of the plants. It has been pointed out that carbonate of lime is an efficient spreader and has a beneficial effect on classes of land, but as it is desired to make the amount of money available go a* far as possible the use of pumice sand was decided upon, the cost of which is practically nil. It is hoped that large areas of ragwort-infested ! land will be dealt with.
