TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB THE MIDSUMMER MEETING WEIGHTS FOR FIRST DAY RAHOTU HURDLES HANDICAP.
Advance Plane 7 1“ A FURTHER STAGE UNITED RACING FRONT. A furtherance of the campaign at. present being conducted for the establishment of a chain of Owners’, Breeders', and Trainers’ Associations throughout the Dominion, Mr. E. G. Sutherland, of Auckland, addressed a gathering of enthusiasts at Palmerston North week. The meeting proved to be a thoroughly representative one, owners, breeders, and trainers from the whole district being present. Mr. Sutherland, the organiser of the movement, outlined the benefits to be derived by those associated with the sport as a resul.t of the increased powers gained by unity in the ranks. The speaker mentioned that in the Auckland district, where the association had now been operating for some little time, overtures had been made to the railway transport authorities and to the city and district clubs on pertinent matters with very satisfactory results. He added that there were many channels which could be exploited for the benefit of all classes interested in racing, and that the Government also was awaiting a direction from a united body on certain matters.
Mr. Sutherland further stressed the loss of revenue not only to the clubs but to the Treasury as a result of offcourse betting. Meantime those desirous of betting away from meetings had little option except to infringe the laws of the land, and it behoved the association to discover means whereby this difficulty could be overcome. The financial loss resulting affected not only the clubs concerned and the Treasury, but the owners and trainers, for the withholding of every pound entailed a reduction in totalisator turnover on which the stake money was based. The sneaker mentioned that it was proposed that, in addition to Palmerston North’s having its oWn district committee to represent the owners, trainers, and breeders, who were all closely allied, it would operate a central executive to cover all that territory embodying Wellington, Wairarapa, and Wanganui.
The election of officers resulted in the following being appointed:—President of district committee, Mr. C. W. Boyd (Palmerston North), vice-presi-
dents, Messrs. T. A. Duncan and J. Bull (Rangitikei), E. Riddiford (Wellington), Russell Grace (Wanganui), C. T. Keeble (Palmerston North), R. McDonald and W. T. Bailey (Ashhurst), F. S. Easton (Foxton), W. Alexander (Waverley); district committee, Messrs. A. E. Neale (Bulls), L. G. Morris (Marton), W. Dwyer (Wanganui), J. M. Hastie (Feilding), J. F. Walker (Ashhurst), A. Wright (Levin), B. Burgess (Opaki), M. Williams (Otaki); Palmerston North committee, Messrs. C. W. Boyd, H. E. Edmunds, W. Pine, L. A. Pine, G. W. New, A. F. Lawrie, L. Knaup, A. W.
