TAKAPUNA CLUB
MEETING AT ELLERSLIE PROMISING FIXTURE REVIEW OF PROSPECTS. (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Nov. 26. After the remarkable success of the Waikato meeting last week-end, it will be very interesting to see if the Takapuna Jockey Club can surpass the Te Rapa figures when it holds its spring fixture at Ellerslie to-mor-row and on Monday. Fields are first class and after mid-week rain the going should be ideal. Win-and-place betting will be in operation both days. An alteration has been made in the order of running, the Tiri Hurdles coming up to first place and the Melrose Maiden being run as the second event instead. A slight alteration has also been made in the times for races, the intervals being lengthened a little. The only thing wrong with the big race, the Alison Cup, is that the field is much too big! Even with the prospect’ of several withdrawals by starting time the race is going to be a very difficult one to win, for mile and a-quarter races at headquarters are the hardest in the country, even without a large number of runners. Waikato running threw an important light on the Alison Cup prospects, with the result that King Rey, second in the Waikato Cup, is going to be a firm favourite, especially as he will be coupled with Tradesman, the latter having surprised by the manner in which he came from the back to run third at a mile last Monday. King Rey is the logical public selection, for he will be improved by last week's run. Jonathan ran well in the Waikato Cup, and so too did Mazir, who was probably the most unlucky competitor, in that he was apparently hopelessly placed for the first mile and then in the final quarter he was galloping over everything almost in line with the third horse. If Mazir does not get. too far back in the middle stages he will be a strong prospect. Royal Appellant is back to his best and possesses a good chance, and Scotland ought to be all the better for his outing in the Waikato Cup, in which he was never prominent. Big Dook ran fair races last week-end, but. fresh horses that did not race at Te Rapa in Kelly, Gay Talkie, Crooning and Knight of Australia may make it very interesting. Kelly is a form horse. He does not like a big field, for he is shy of goinginside a horse and in such a big field this may prove a big handicap. Gay Talkie is an improving three-year-old who must run well, for his latest efforts have been very attractive. Crooning has never been better and she will carry the support of Ellerslie track-watchers. Sinking Fund and Mungatoon are still nicely placed, and there are others down among the lightweights capable of going to the front and stopping there. However, to fine it down to half a dozen prospects, the process of elimination sees remaining Mazir, Kelly, King Rey, Gay Talkie, Crooning and Royal Appellant. After Impasto's second and first at Te Rapa, practical evidence that he is back to his very best, he will not lack support in the sprint, the Cheltenham Handicap. But he may find Tray Bit hard to dispose of, for the form of the latter at Avondale last month was high class and if in the same condition the topweight will find it a problem to concede the weight. Adalene raced well at Te Rapa, while Symcony may not be so easily caught this time if she has derived any benefit from her two runs last week-end. Mungacre is due for , an improved effort, and Gay Seton revealed something like his best pace ■ last Monday. Shy, High Tea and Gay Broney are lightweight prospects, the . last-named having surprised by the ■ dash he displayed over this distance , at Whangarei. Mainland has yet to . run a bad race and may be dangerous j on the minimum. Tray Bit may be ; the best. Fields are very solid in the half dozen other events and the winners , are going to take some finding. The ( form horses engaged are the fol- ( lowing:- - . . \ 12.45.
