CHARGE OF ASSAULT
SEQUEL TO BOXING INCIDENT STRIKING THE REFEREE | Per Preus Association, j PALMERSTON N., Nov. 26. • Following the sensational ending to i the professional boxing match last , night, when Bill Pluto was disquali- ' fled after striking the referee, Pluto' was arrested at his hotel on a charge | of assaulting the referee and released i on bail. He appeared before .Justices ! to-day and pleaded gu’.lty. Mr. Ongley, solicitor for defendant, said that Pluto received a good deal of provocation from outside the ring and | vas highly strung. He had expressed ! •egret immediately after the incident I md apologised to the referee, who did 1 aot desire a prosecution nor did the Boxing Associat on. Counse* described the charge as trivial. The police said the assault had taken place in public, and such conduct could not be allowed to continue or it might become general. The Bench imposed a line of £2 10s. The Manawatu Box. ng Association in the meantime is holding up Pluto’s 40 per cent., the loser’s share, of the £75 purse pend.ng a decision by’ the New Zealand Council, which will also deal with Pluto's licence.
