MATARAWA SCHOOL
fAX Ba in rail :y the Matarawa School celebrates its eightieth j birthday. This day school is the oldest school in the disI trict, for when it was established the only other school in existI ence was the Industrial School, which was gradually to evolve i info the Whanganui Collegiate School. The first site of the i school was in the Matarawa' Valley, the original school being I under the direction of Charles' Mungo Harkness. A school building was erected in the valley, but eventually the present site was occupied. The early establishment of this school was doubtless due to the fact that the early settlers of the district were. Scots, and they carried with them from Scotland the passion for education which has been their outstanding characteristic since the days of John Knox. It. seems a far call from John Knox to the Matarawa Valley, but the spirit of the Great Presbyter breathes to-day in the district as surely as it does in Auld Reekie.
