LONG NOSES

1 SOME AMUSING STORIES Not long ago a Hindu in the Malay States, who was suspected of being under the influence of liquor while driving a car, was asked by the medical officer at the police station to ’ touch the tip of his nose with his } tongue, states a London journal. He failed, but was released next day be- ’ cause he still could not do so, neither could the magistrate before whom he was haled. In fact, few people have noses long enough. There are others, like “Schnozzle” ’ Durante, to whom the feat would pref sent no difficulty. But even this generously gifted gentleman has a small g nose when compared with that of Thomas Wedders, a Yorkshireman, whose olfactory organ was 7iin. in f length. It extended below his lower lip, and he used to earn his living by exhibiting it at fairs. Long noses seem to be a Yorkshire characteristic, for “Old • Boots,” of Ripon, a cadaverous-looking * fellow, could hold a coin between his J nose and chin.
