BOXING SENSATION
PLUTO FLOORS REFEREE PALMERSTON NORTH BOUT WARNINGS RESENTED There was a sensational finish to the professional boxing contest between W. Pluto (Australia) and J. McMahon (Palmerston North), at Palmerston North, last night, when Pluto floored the referee, Mr J. P. Evans, in the fifth round. Pluto had been spoken to repeatedly by the referee for holding and hitting with the open glove. Apparently he took exception to the referee’s intervention and in the fifth round, after pushing Evans aside, suddenly sent him to the floor with a right swing. After taking the count, the referee rose to his feet and awarded the bout to McMahon. The ring was immediately filled with police officers and excited spectators and indications were that it would have taken but little to start a donnybrook. Pluto left the hall under police protection by means of a side entrance, the crowd remaining in the hall for fully an hour after the contest had concluded. The bout was not an impressive exhibition and Pluto was ahead on points when he took to the referee.
