“DEVIL’S ISLAND” EECAPE
After 12 days in an open canoe, drenched by tropical rains and hurricanes and schorched by a blazing sun, five men who made a dramatic dash for liberty from the French penal colony on "Devil's Island,” landed at Port of Spain, Trinidad, recently, in a starving and exhausted condition. Two are Frenchmen convicted of murder, and one an Italian charged with opium dealing. The other two, a Belgian and a Corsican, had been sentenced for forgery and trading in arms. Apart from their ordeal by sun and rain, they had no food for nearly eight days, all their meagre supplies having been washed overboard during a' hurricane.
