PHYSICAL “JERKS”

Y.M.C.A. CHAMPIONSHIPS MTNTER PROGRAMME RESULTS To mark the conclusion of the Y.M.C.A. Physical Department’s successful winter programme, the gymnastic championships were held in all grades and provided keen competition, maintaining interest throughout. The gymnastic championships, which were instituted by the Y.M.C.A. in 1935, have proved a great incentive to improvement in the standard, which as a result was this season particularly high in all classes. The judges of the championships—Miss Paterson (Girls’ College), Mr. W. Minnell, and Mr. L. Cross, physical direc-tor--expressed themselves as being dehghtea with the excellent work, and judges from outside the association’s activities commented most favourably on the standard attained by the young people of Wanganui who are enjoying the benefits of the physical training which the Y.M.CA. rffers. In the senior men’s and senior ladies’ championships last year’s winners (Mr. 11. Johnston and Miss D. Garth respectively) were again successful. Mr. P. Koorey, who had been doing excellent work and was regarded as being well in the running fo.' the senior men’s championship, suffered a Jnght injury during the competition and had to withdraw. The work of the younger men’s division was of a particularly high standard, the winner being D. Archibald, who finished 11 points ahead of last year’s champion, B. O’Shaughnessy. The excellence of the woik in il.-j junior divisions is held ’.o augur well for the standard in the future and toi physical education in Wanganui. The most promising were J. Beinett and Pani Korowhiti, who could not be separated by the judges in the intermediate boys’ championship. Keen competition was provided in the secondary boys’ division, w ; th Evan Jones the winner, one ] oint el'eao of George Pocock. The girls’ work covered a wide syllabus and both the secondary an 1 the primary grades were outstanding. Miss M Pvockell annexed the secondary girls’ championship in a manner which indicates that she will go far in her work. She was closely followed in the points aggregate by Miss T. Christiansen, whose display was also nearly perfect. The primary girls’ work was of a less varied nature, and Fay Sisson won convincingly from. Raie Barnett and Avis Duggan. To all members who gave so much time and energy to the championships, to the judges for their painstaking work, and to generous citizens who presented the trophies, the association acknowledges a debt of gratitude. The donors of trophies were as follow. Messrs W. S. Rennie, A. C. I Seivewright, S. Hanton, R. Fitchett, I W. J. Robinson, L. Bassett, J. Brisco, I P. Koorey, C. Young, R. Wilson, H.
