BREACH OF TRAFFIC REGULATIONS. | HEAVY PENALTY IMPOSED. 1 Charged before Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., in the Raetihi Magistrate's | Court, on Wednesday, Frank Jelly-1 man, carrier, of Raetihi, was ai-l raigned under the Heavy Traffic Regulations with carrying on a goods service between Raetihi and Horopito, otherwise than In persuant to and in conformity with the terms of the goods service licence held by him. Inspector Wilson laid the information, and after he had placed the facts of the case before the magistrate, the latter inflicted a fine of £B, witnesses expenses 15s, Court costs Ills and solicitor's fee, 10s 6d. By-law Breaches. > Although he had warned several offenders against the practice of riding on footpaths and also riding without tights the borough inspector (Mr. E. E? Davis) proceeded against several residents of Raetihi in the Magistrate's Court for breaches of the bylaws,. Fines of £ss. Court costs 10s, and solicitors fee 10s 6<l were inflicted against J. J. Chelley and Patau Tetka for cycling on footpaths in the borough, by Magistrate R. M. Watson, Paterson Te Koura for a similar offence being fined ss, 12s costs and 10s Gd solicitor's fee. I Huikumu Riding. The section ot |the Pipiriki Road between the Huikumu Road and Pipiriki is being ! cleared of slips, watertables deepened, land the roadway generally trimmed lup in anticipation of increased traffic Iwhen the River Road is again opened ' for wheel traffic. The reduction of the sharp bend near Aird’s is now in hand; the road is being widened at the cutting ap-

proaching and the tilling straightened. When this work is completed the cutting near Handley’s will be widened out”to provide better vision, and good two-vehicle width of roadway. The bridges have been inspected and a report on same submitted. | The narrow sections of the Owairua Road are being widened out and made safe for wheel traffic pending the transport of the seasons wool from this locality. It is anticipated that, crushing operations for metalling on Ihe Waipuna Road will be commenced at a near date. The council’s crusher promised for this work has been overhauled and is ready for work. Immediately weather conditions ate favourable the formation on the Huikumu Road will be trimmed up and the roadway generally improved. The usual maintenance work has been done on the different roads. Karioi Riding. The timber for the small bridge on McDonnell’s Road has been delivered to the site. The Section of the bridge will he put in hand immediately the bridge men are available. When the bridge is completed the metalling will be pushed on, meantime weak fillings are being metalled with river metal to carry the metal lorries over to the main work. Practically all the culverts have been set and stripping done at the metal deposit to be in readiness for an early . commencement. The Turakina Valley Road has been worked with the power grader between the Waiouru Road and Buchanlan's gateway, further work will be (lone beyond this point as soon as I possible. | Good progress is being made with I the deviation at Waiouru where there [will be considerable improvement to | the alignment when the work is completed? I A deviation has been suggested to 'the P.W. Department. The suggestion is to strike off from the road at the I Whaharuru concrete bridge and link up again with the existing road at the foot of Monument Hill. The formation will be comparatively light, the roadway will be practically straight, and the tortuous hill will be entirely cut out. The power grader has been used on the Waiouru, Wangaehu Valley and Karioi Station Roads with good results. Man_’anui Riding. The concrete

pipes have been delivered Io replace the old bridge on Harris’ Hill and the drainage completed to the road boundary and connected up with the drainage done some time back. The pipes will he set and the filling work done without delay. Some of the most dangerous corners on the Middle Road have been reduced. and in-bends straightened. The new alignment will be metalled when consolidated. The grader has done good work on this road and will continue on to the Motete, and Huikumu Roads as soon as possible. The excessive camber on a section lof the Ohura Road near McNie’s is [being reduced and the grade adjusted. Other rough sections of this road will be attended to when this work is comlpleted. j Attention will be given to the Manganui Valley Road as soon as work- ' men can be released from other works. The formation on the Pukekaha Road leading from the end of the metal to a point beyond the Motere Road junction has been trimmed up and the water-tables cleared over the worst sections. Breastworks have been erected on the Makakahi Road to hold troublesome slips and add to road width at these points. Ohakune Riding. Repairs have been done to the metal on Smith’s mill road ami the roadway trimmed over portions. The drains leading to the culvert near Tuatini’s on the Ohakune Road have been cleared to a point near the ( road boundary. The work will be completed to the culvert as soon as convenient. When this work is done a clear waterway will be provided thus making better provision for flood waters. The section of this road near the Umwmuri School has been banked [and widened and will be metalled as convenient.

Repairs have been done to Ihe upper end of the Mangateitei Road. The breastwork at the pier to the Mangateitei Bridge is proving effective, the erosion having ceased. The site plan of the proposed bridge over the Mangateitei Stream, Dreadnought Road, has not yet been returned. The plans for the proposed bridge will be put in hand immediately this comes to hand. The lakes and other roads in the locality have been worked with the grader and are now in good order. The power grader has been used on the Ohakune Road over the period. Parapara Riding. The Matahiwi Road has been repaired and the worst sections trimmed, the water-tables deepened as far as Pearce's wool shed. The small bridge at the foot, of the hill requires repairs as soon as possible, some of the timbers being defective. Boyd's Road has been trimmed up. a new culvert set and the junction metalled. The metalled section of the Matahiw’i Road has also been repaired. Preparations are being made for the completion of the metalling on the Oruakukuru Road. The work is to be recommenced immediately the weather conditions improve. The Ohotu Road has been trimmed over the worst sections to facilitate the transport of wool. The grader will be used on this road immediately conditions are favourable. The power grader has been used on the Parapara Road at frequent intervals during the period and the usual maintenance work done. Ruatiti Riding.—General attention has been given to the Makino Road, and water-tables cleared and the roadway generally trimmed up. Narrow sections of Ihe Ohura Road require widening, there being several dangerous places. This work will be put in hand as soon as workmen are ■.released from other works. Slips have ' been cleared and general trimming done to the roadway. The 24in. concrete pipes have been delivered to replace the old wooden culvert near Mclntoshe’s; these will be set when workmen are in the locality. The Erua Road and the tracks leading thereto have been trimmed, a track cleared through the slips and other flood damage attended to. It has not yet been possible to attend 1o the culvert and tilling al the upper end of this road. The road has been widened over narrow sections of the Mangatiti ißoad, slips cleared and the usual maintenance work done on other |roads as far as available labour would allow.
