“MAID OF THE MOUNTAINS”

SEASON OPENS TO-MORROW To-morrow night, after weeks of assiduous training, the mighty cast chosen by the Wanganui Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society will appear in the opening night’s performance of “The Maid of the Mountains,” which is scheduled to run for six nights at the Opera House, three in this week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week. Several rehearsals have taken place in the Opera House already and the cast is as conversant with its duties as though it had reached the last night. It has already reached the standard of perfection one would associate with a show which had been running for a long season. The cast is as follow: Vittoria .. Merle Spurdie BaldasarreGeorge McDougal General Malona Jim Pawson Beppo William Watters Carlo E. K. Cameron Andrea R. Nelson Pietro J. H. Armstrong Lieut. Rugini . D. McCormack Crumpet W. R. Russell Mayor A. D. Tilley Tonio W. J. Hastings Teresa Olive Scoular Angela D. Miller Glanetta M. Vickers Corporal N. Davidson Maria (dancing girl) ... Eva Matthews A dress rehearsal was conducted yesterday and revealed that the society has indeed set a high standard, the cast confirming the opinion expressed earlier that “The Maid of the Mountains” will be the best work the society has ever undertaken. The story, the music, and the humour lend themselves to the hand of n producer of Cecily Tabor-Gregory’s capabilities. The first scene is laid in the robbers’ den and the curtain rises on the henchmen of “Baldasarre” awaiting the hour of farewell. Division of the spoils follows. In the second scene is pictured the courtyard of the Governor’s Palace, where the assembled subjects farewell the old and welcome the new Governor. Little they know that the new official is the reckless “Baldasarre” disguised in the uniform of the real Governor whom his band waylaid. The third scene is on an island of dreams. “Love Will Find a Way,” “A Paradise for Two,” “A Bachelor Gay”—“The Maid of the Mountains” is packed with appealing musical numbers. Its ballets, trained by the Geo. Allen School, with Eva Matthews playing the part of “Maria,” the dancing girl, will delight the hearts of Wanganui people. The curtain rises to-morrow night and the plans are at the D.I.C.
