RICCARTON TO-DAY NEW ZEALAND CUP C.J.C. MEETING TO OPEN REVIEW OF PROSPECTS Interest in racing circles throughout the Dominion will be centred on Riccarton to-day, when the Canterbury Jockey Club's: spring racing carnival, will commence. Featured on the programme to-day are three important events, these being the New Zealand Cup, the Stewards’ Handicap, and the Welcome Stakes, the lastnamed being perhaps one of the deciding events in the season’s two-year-bld supremacy. The meeting will be continued on Monday. Wednesday, and Saturday of next week. The totalisator at Riccarton is operated on the win-and-place system, and until the Trentham “tote” was installed that at Riccarton was considered the best in New Zealand. Racing to-day will commence with the Spring Brush Hurdles,-in which six are engaged. Apparently owners of North Island hurdlers overlook the excellent chances offered at Riccarton with a stake of £3OO and a good pool on the machine. Redolent has been a consistent performer and has several placings and two wins to his credit in recent months, included being the Spreydon Hurdles at Riccarton in August. He may lind his most dangerous opponents in Santoft, Look Smart and Toreador. The Spring Plate is run at special weights, and this enables Matoru, a dual winner at Trentham, to meet Rebel Lad, Wild Career and Willie Win on level terms. Mandamus may be depended on for a solid race, and Trench Fight impressed at Trentham. but few will go past Matoru. Run over seven furlongs, the Linwood Handicap presents a problem. One may expect to go a little lower on the list than Chidden for the likely favourite, for the topweight has no recent form. Black Thread impressed last season, and Epic, Cyrillian, Rose of Tralee, Roaming, Sir Hugh, Autumn Wind and ArrowGlen will also have friends. The best may be Epic, Black Thread and Autumn Wind. The next is the most important race, the New Zealand Cup, run over two miles. Again the dearth of stayers is emphasised, for only two of the field of ten are weighted above 7.9, and there are five below 7.5. Master Brierly heads the list with 8.11, and now that Hunting Cat has dropped out he should be favourite. He has won over two and a-quarter miles in addition to several successes at more than ten furlongs, and steadily improved at Trentham. Argentic is another that will be well in the picture. Third in the Cup last year, fourth in the Auckland Cup, and winner of the Wellington Handicap <ll furlongs) last month at Trentham, Argentic has excellent credentials. F erson won the Waverley Cup on Labour Day, and will be remembered as a good winner in the Stratford and Taranaki Cups two years ago. He scored easily in the Waverley Cup but this is different class, though his trainer, H. Gray, should know what is wanted. Polydora started favourite for the Cup two years ago but failed to show up. Since then she has done well at the hurdling game and has become more solid. Werohia has won over ten furlongs and was second to Hunting Cat in the Manawatu Cup <ll miles), but does not appeal at two miles. Might, third in the Cup two years ago, is a real stayer but never seems able to rise to the occasion in a race of such importance as this. Rona Bay has had several wins over ten furlongs but here again a win would surprise. The Surgeon appeals on breeding and performances as being

a lightwieght likely to bring about, an upset. Tout le Monde has always had a reputation but generally runs just below what is expected of him, though he showed a surprise return to form w-hen he won the Banks Peninsula Cup last Saturday. Carfex has been scratched. Queen Dorothy has been racing consistently and is another lightweight possibility. Reducing the field by half one is left With Master Brierly, Argentic, Ferson, polydora, The Surgeon and Queen Dorothy, and contining the issue to three one has Master Brierly, Argentic and Fersen. The best of the juveniles will be (seen in action in the Welcome Stakes, for the Wellesley Stakes winner, Francis Drake, is opposed by Counterblast, Cardplayer, Guinea Fowl, Royal Order, Sigurd and Airam. Still, the Chief Ruler colt should be equal to fill demands. The Apprentices’ Handicap is run over a mile, and the chances are that Cerne Abbas will be favourite, with flanger coming from Owlsgleam, Top Notch, Silver Slipper, Double Gift and lHeloise. , ~ The big sprint, the Stewards Handicap. has a much stronger field, Numerically as well as relatively, than the New Zealand Cup. Dungarvan Las gone up to 9.4. as a result of his two impressive victories at Trentham. Emissary will be dangerous and Plato must be respected on that *Trentham surprise win. Concertpitch, knockfin Gast year's winner), Pakahui. Triune, Laughing Lass, Dollar Bill and Great Star must be considered, but the form of Ben Braggie on the track and in his race at Trentham certainly entitles him to be treated With the utmost respect. All indications point to his starting favourite, but Knockfin and Dungarvan will extend him. The Riccarton Handicap will con--mae the day’s proceedings, ana in this Guarantee, Wild Chase, Custos, tunneller. Boomerang and Stolen March will carry money. The following may be well supported in their respective engagements: — Spring Brush Hurdles. Redolent, Eantoft, Toreador. Spring Plate. Matoru, Trench fight, Rebel Lad. Linwood Handicap.—Epic, Black S’hread, Autumn Wind. New Zealand Cup.—Master Brierly, Argentic. Fersen. Welcome Stakes.—Francis Drake, Counterblast, Sigurd. Apprentices’ Handicap.—Cerne Abjias. NOTES AND DEFECTIONS LATEST OPERATIONS [ Per Pre«» Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 6. The weather was warm for work at Riccarton this morning, but the proceedings did not arouse any interest. The inside of the trial grass track was open, but not many horses patronised it, practically everything being done on the plough. There were a few short sprints on the plough down the straight, but most of the horses did only useful pacing. Some two-year-olds worked down the straight on the course proper. Might and The Surgeon went a mile on the plough, Might finishing a long way in front in 1.46. The remainder of T. R. George’s team, arrivals the previous day, including Boomerang, Debham, and Sigurd, did useful work. Pelmet was restricted to walking exercise. She is very sore as a result of a mishap in the race at Motukarara and is unlikely to start in the Riccarton Handicap. The hurdler Wexford Bridge will not be seen at the meeting. He has ricked a joint and will need a rest. McHeath has a cold and will miss his engagement in the Riccarton Handicap. The latest arrivals from the South are: Silver Sail, Mutus, Look Smart, Toreador, Peacock, Queen Dorothy, Ilithyia, Bellerive. Top Row, and Double Gift, while Rona Bay, Siegmund. Toper, and Geitel, from the North, made their appearance to-day. Carfex was scratched for the New Zealand Cup, and Lowenberg for all engagements at the meeting at 9 o’clock this morning.
